Matilda the Musical allows the audience to let loose and enjoy the skilful staging of this classic children's book.
The musical based on the book by renowned author Roald Dahl brings a hearty laugh to both adults and children alike.
It has been acclaimed 24 awards for Best Musical.
In addition with all the other awards it has won, Matilda the Musical racks up to a total of 101 international accolades.
The story depicts precocious young Matilda as she is raised by parents (Matthew Rowland and Emily Squibb) who want nothing to do with her.
For the International leg of the tour, the role of Matilda is rotated by 3 actors, Yolani Balfour, Donna Craig and Myla Williams.
She navigates school and a horrid headmistress (Ryan de Villiers & James Wolstenholme), finding solace in her homeroom teacher, Ms Honey ( Carly Thoms & Gemma Scholes).
Whimsical and magical scenes from the book are recreated perfectly, such as when the ever-lurking Headmistress, Ms Trunchbull, grabs a student by the pigtails and flings her across the field.
A child stuffs himself full of cake in minutes.
Through the use of cleverly placed lights and sounds, the illusion of the unreal is constructed without flaw.
Lights dazzle into the audience as once again the stage bursts into a flurry of movement. Actors fly into the audience on swings as they sing about growing up, inciting yet another round of clapping. Children climb on school gates, shoving letters into the grills, making this an action packed experience!
The show’s catchy music and witty lyrics are produced by Timothy Minchkin (also composer and lyricist of Groundhog Day The Musical) with a book by Dennis Kelly.
The choreography performed by the mostly child ensemble brings the lyrics to life, visually representing the upbeat show tunes on the stage.
Matilda the Musical presents an evening of family fun at the Sands Theatre.
The translation of a beloved children's book onto the stage is sure to bring you delight - regardless of whether you're a bookworm like Matilda and have read the book beforehand.
