It’s that time of year again…British Tutors' Festive Fun Christmas Card Competition is back!

Every year British Tutors runs a competition where they ask all of their students to design and create a Christmas card based around a particular theme. The competition is open to ALL AGES.

Once you have completed your card and sent it in to British Tutors by the deadline (details below), the most creative and Christmassy cards will receive an exciting prize, with one lucky entry becoming the official British Tutors festive card for 2023!

Over the years this has become a really popular and enjoyable competition for our students and their parents, and we would love for you all to get involved again this year to help us spread the Christmas cheer!

This year, the theme is…

CHRISTMAS POET-TREE!

The History of the Christmas Tree

The tradition of modern Christmas trees began in Germany during the 16th century.

While they are typically associated with Christian symbolism, today they have become a part of secular traditions as both religious and non-religious families use them as part of their festive decorations at home.

Christmas trees were conventionally evergreen coniferous trees that were cut in the wild and then brought into the home, to be decorated with lights (traditionally candles!) and ornaments as part of Christmas festivities.

Today, many families place presents around the tree to be opened on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day – alongside the presents delivered by Father Christmas.

This year in Singapore you’ll see many Christmas trees lining the promenades and filling the malls, as well as people’s homes. Christmas trees were actually first introduced in China and Japan by Western missionaries in the 19th and 20th centuries – not long after they had been popularised in England by Queen Victoria and her German husband, Prince Albert, who decorated their trees with toys, candles, candies, popcorn, fancy cakes, ribbons and paper chains.

What would your perfect Christmas tree look like?

What To Do:

We would like you to write a festive-themed poem in the shape of a Christmas tree: a POET-TREE! You can present your poem in whichever way you’d like, but remember that we are looking for beautifully written and visually appealing Christmas Poet-Trees to send out as our annual company Christmas card. The entry should be no bigger than a single piece of A4 paper, but otherwise please be as creative as you’d like!

We will be super impressed if you can include…

  • Onomatopoeia
  • Hyperbole
  • Metaphor
  • Alliteration
  • Simile
  • Personification

Some Christmas tree books and poetry that your students might enjoy taking inspiration from include:

  • The Christmas Pine by Julia Donaldson
  • Pick a Pine Tree by Patricia Toht
  • Little Tree by e. e. cummings
  • Christmas Trees by Robert Frost
  • Christmas Tree by John Frederick Nims
  • Christmas Tree by James Merrill

Deadline Details:

Please email a photo or scanned copy of the Poet-Tree to info@britishtutors.com with details of the creator.

All entries should be received by Wednesday 20th December.

Shortlisted entries will be posted on the British Tutors Facebook page (along with the student’s first name and age). Sunny City Kids and British Tutors will then declare the winner on Friday 23rd December

It will become the official British Tutors festive card for 2023 and emailed out to all of our tutors and clients.

Good luck, have fun, and enjoy the wonderful run up to Christmas!
