Located within the National Gallery Singapore, the Keppel Centre for Art Education is a space where children can explore the intersection of art, creativity, and play.
The Centre revolves around the theme of "Art & Wonder: Nurturing Wonder through Play and Creativity," offering seven interactive learning zones specifically designed for children aged 4-12.
The space invites young visitors to embark on a journey of artistic discovery that stimulates imagination and fosters creative expression.
What's particularly wonderful is that this enriching experience is completely free for all visitors, making art education accessible to everyone in the community!
The first zone brings Raden Saleh's iconic artwork "Boschbrand (Forest Fire)" to life through "A Brush with Forest Fire."
Armed with an interactive paintbrush, children can explore a re-imagined tropical forest environment where they'll learn about environmental issues, colour theory, and composition.
They can even change the artwork's narrative by helping put out a virtual forest fire through an interactive game!
At the end of this zone, you can put together everything you've learned to create your own masterpiece and then display it proudly on the gallery's walls on a digital canvas.
This zone encourages children to experiment with colors, shapes, light, and shadow.
By observing how shapes project onto screens, young artists develop an understanding of how symbols and colors combine to create meaningful artwork.
This interactive space invites families to engage in role-playing activities and create portraits using magnetic props representing facial features. It's a fun way for children to celebrate the diversity of human expression and personality.
In this experimentation-themed space, children use 3D doodling pens and wooden shapes to create unique sculptures inspired by the Gallery's collection.
This hands-on approach helps them understand how physical materials can be used to craft narratives about themselves and the world.
Families can participate in drop-in and facilitated workshops centred around expression.
Look out for a whole range of fun activities from painting and molding clay, to creating collages and crafts.
The perfect place to wind down, this zone is stocked with age-appropriate books that offer further learning opportunities centered around art, including titles like "Awesome Art Singapore: 10 Works from the Lion City Everyone Should Know."
Recognizing that sometimes children need a quiet moment, the Centre also offers a soothing space where visitors can rest, regulate their feelings, and renew their focus if they feel over-stimulated.
The Centre is popular on weekends and public holidays, so plan on a waiting time of up to 30 minutes during peak periods when the Centre reaches full capacity.
